RECORD NUMBER OF VALUE CHANGES MADE IN VOLUME 6 OF THE 2008 SCOTT STANDARD POSTAGE STAMP CATALOGUE

There are more than 25,500 value changes in this year's Volume 6, which includes Countries of the world So-Z. "There are many more value changes than have typically been made to this volume in recent years," according to Scott Catalogue editor James Kloetzel. Large portions of the value changes have been increases, which have been driven by market prices and only indirectly by currency exchange rates.

The countries with the most activity are Turkey, Tunisia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Sweden, Tonga, Spain and Syria. Value changes in Turkey span all periods. The first issue is up close to ten percent, but many other value increases are larger. The popular 1914 2pa-200pi Views of Constantinople set, Scott 254-270, jumps to $777.75 unused from $734.20 unused in the 2007 Volume 6.

Values for sets in mint, never-hinged condition have been installed from the 1923 issue (Scott 605) up to the breakpoint for the listings of stamps in never-hinged condition in 1939 (Scott 817). As might be expected, the premiums for Turkey sets in never-hinged condition in this time period are quite large.

In Tunisia, as in Turkey, value changes are seen in profusion throughout the listings. Many changes are significant, such as the increases in the very first set, the 1888 1c-5fr Coat of Arms, Scott 1-8, which jump to $768.50 unused and $508.70 used, from $567 unused and $324.85 used last year. Many lower-value sets also see their values increase by similar percentages.

Most value changes in Sweden tend to be in later issues rather than in the classics, and the sizes of the changes are not as large as those seen in Turkey and Tunisia. The 1970 30o Bird set of 5, Scott 873-877, moves to $4.25 mint, never hinged from $3.50 last year, while the 1991 5k Maps set of 6, Scott 1861-1866, rises to $14.40 mint, never hinged and $9.60 used, from $12 mint, never hinged and $7.50 used. An even larger percentage increase is seen in the 1997 (5k) Classic Cars set, Scott 2248-2253, which climbs to $13.50 both mint, never hinged and used, from $9.60 mint, never hinged and $9 used last year.

The cover price for the printed version of Volume 6 and each subsequent 2008 Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue Volume is $65.99. The CD-ROM price for Volume 6 is $59.99. A package that includes print and CD-ROM versions of Volume 6 is also available for $99.99. The U.S. Specialized and the Fall U.S. Specialized Valuing Supplement will be released in October, and the Classic Specialized in November.
